What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art that focuses on controlling an opponent, escaping difficult positions and using technique, leverage and positioning rather than relying purely on strength.

Training includes takedowns, positional control, escapes, sweeps and submissions.

It’s suitable for people of different ages, sizes and fitness levels, and one of the great things about BJJ is that you can continue learning and improving for many years.

What happens in your first BJJ class?

Don’t worry if you’ve never trained before.

Your first class will be explained step-by-step, and you’ll be partnered with an experienced student who can help you get comfortable with the basic movements and techniques.

A typical beginners’ session will include:

● A warm-up and movement exercises

● Learning basic BJJ positions

● Simple techniques and escapes

● Practising techniques with a partner

● Guidance from the instructor throughout the session

You won’t be expected to know anything beforehand.

The most important thing is simply to turn up and give it a go.

Gi BJJ for Beginners

Monday and Wednesday — 7:00pm–8:00pm

Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is traditionally practised wearing the BJJ gi, allowing students to learn techniques involving grips on the jacket and trousers as well as fundamental grappling positions.

No Gi BJJ for Beginners

Tuesday and Thursday — 7:00pm–8:00pm

No Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is practised without the traditional gi and focuses on grappling techniques using a rash guard and shorts or suitable training clothing.

Saturday No Gi BJJ

Saturday — 2:00pm–4:00pm

Our Saturday No Gi session provides another opportunity to train and is open to students looking to develop their grappling skills.

If you’re new to BJJ, we’ll help you understand what you’re doing and make sure you’re comfortable with the training environment.

Do I need to be fit before starting BJJ?

No.

You don’t need to get fit before joining a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class.

BJJ training itself will help improve your fitness, strength, coordination, mobility and cardiovascular conditioning over time.

You’ll train at your own level, and as you become more comfortable your fitness will naturally improve.

Will I have to fight someone on my first class?

No.

Beginners aren’t thrown straight into hard sparring.

You’ll first learn the fundamentals and get used to moving and training with a partner. As you become more comfortable, you’ll gradually be introduced to live training under the guidance of your instructor.

Everyone remembers what it was like to be new.

What should I wear?

For your first class, comfortable sports clothing is normally fine, plus we have spare Gis available.

You don’t need to buy an expensive BJJ kit before you’ve even tried the sport.

If you decide that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is for you, we’ll explain what equipment and clothing you’ll need for regular training.

Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu suitable for beginners?

Absolutely.

Everyone who trains BJJ was once a beginner.

At Wimbledon BJJ, our beginners’ classes are designed to give new students a friendly introduction to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu while teaching the fundamentals that form the foundation of your training.

You’ll train alongside other students and gradually develop your technique, confidence and fitness.
